As you type, Aha watches for the end of each word: a space, a return or punctuation. A moment later it fixes obvious mistakes in the word you just finished and shows a soft blue pulse over it. Your cursor and selection stay exactly where they were.
See you at the café
Corrections run entirely on your Mac. They don’t need an account or a network connection, and nothing you type is sent anywhere. Aha only fixes mistakes. Tone, meaning and style are left alone; that’s what Field Assist is for.
Correction levels
Choose how much Aha fixes in Settings › Corrections › Correction level. Balanced is the default.
| Level | What it fixes | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Conservative | Known typos, repeated words and accidental double spaces only. | teh → the |
| Balanced | Adds sentence capitalization, missing apostrophes and careful spelling fixes. | dont → don’t |
| Aggressive | Adds broader spelling corrections from the macOS dictionary. | seperate → separate |
What Aha never corrects
- Web addresses, email addresses,
@mentions,#tags, file paths and anything that looks like code. - Words with capitals or digits inside them, like iPhone, macOS or x86, and words in ALL CAPS.
- Words in your Dictionary, and names you’ve saved in Personal Info.
- A correction you reverted earlier in the session.
- Password, one-time-code and payment fields, and any field that looks like it contains a secret.
When Aha isn’t sure what’s in the field, for example while you’re composing with an input method or have text selected, it skips the correction rather than guessing.
Undo a correction
If Aha changes a word you meant, put it back and Aha won’t make that correction again for the rest of the session.
- Revert Last Edit in the menu bar menu undoes the most recent correction or Field Assist edit.
- Recent Edits in the same menu lists recent changes. Click one to revert it, or hold ⌥ and click to copy its text instead.
- The Home page in the Aha window lists the same edits, grouped by day, with a Revert button on each.
- You can also set a shortcut for reverting the last edit. See Keyboard shortcuts.
To keep a word for good, choose Add “word” to Dictionary from the menu right after the correction. Aha restores the word and never corrects it again. You can also add words, names and abbreviations on the Dictionary page in the Aha window.
Correction delay
By default Aha waits 120 milliseconds after a word ends before fixing it, and any further keystroke restarts the wait. Move the Correction delay slider in Settings › Corrections between 60 and 400 milliseconds. A longer, calmer delay gives you time to fix a typo yourself first.
Show Preview next to Correction highlight plays the blue pulse so you know what to look for.
Terminals and code editors
Where you type commands and code, Aha uses Conservative corrections, so only obvious misspellings are fixed. This is controlled by Use conservative corrections in terminals and code editors in Settings › Corrections, which is on by default.
You can change the level for any kind of app on the Rules page, or for a single app on the Apps page. See Rules and apps.
Turn corrections off
- Everywhere: switch off Automatic corrections in Settings › Corrections. Field Assist keeps working.
- For a kind of app or one app: choose No corrections on the Rules or Apps page.
- For a while: choose Pause Aha in the menu bar menu. This stops corrections and Field Assist until you resume.
